ARGUS COURIER : Thursday, Oct 23, 2008 Letter to the Editor By BARRY BUSSEWITZ

Editor: Thank you for sharing your thinking on the Petaluma City Council race (Argus-Courier, Oct. 2). However, I wish you had given more attention to your own online poll the same day, which showed development as the top concern of local residents.

Petalumans recognize the very large-scale developments you featured on your front page the same day will at a minimum increase traffic by 50,000 cars per day, severely impact police and fire ability to deliver services, and overwhelm the city planning office, which just announced drastic layoffs. Furthermore, these projects are based on obsolete economic models — and Regency wants $10 million dollars of city money to build their shopping center at the old Kenilworth site! We should invest this money in our existing local businesses and enhance our sales tax base to provide the city services that we need. When voters express distrust with the direction of the current council, they mean decisions of the current five-member majority. Samantha Freitas, Karen Nau and previously Mike Healy have voted consistently with a majority whose campaigns are funded by tens of thousands of dollars from large developers, much of it from outside of Petaluma. We need a City Council that protects our interests, not development interests. We need a City Council that applies independent thinking to governing.

The voters of Petaluma can see whose huge signs are located on large vacant property — candidates Samantha Freitas, Karen Nau and Mike Healy.

I am voting for Tiffany Renée because she has demonstrated the readiness and commitment by her long-time engagement in civic organizations, city committees and City Council meetings. Tiffany Renée is prepared to apply sound thinking and independent integrity to our local government. We need smart development that fits Petaluma, not colossal overkill.

David Glass has a tremendous record delivering the quality of projects that are consistent with the long-term values and character of the community we love. I am gratified that he is willing to serve another term on our council.

Tiffany Renée and David Glass will restore balance and independence to the council and represent the public’s interest in Petaluma.

Barry Bussewitz, Petaluma

Press Democrat October 17, 2008 Letter to the Editor BY ADAM WITHROW

EDITOR: When I saw the headline "Tiffany Renée for City Council," I thought it's about time my sister ran for office again.

As her younger brother, I have always been proud of her integrity and her willingness to stand up for what she believes is right. As a former Marine and current police officer, I know that counts for a lot when the public needs you.

Growing up, I was fortunate to have such a loving sister. She upholds collective values and is always coordinating family events and keeping up traditions. For instance, our family has an annual gathering, Tamale Day, where we celebrate our Latin heritage by cooking dozens of tamales, playing music and dancing. This is not easy task to organize. However, at the nucleus of it all is Tiff with pen and paper in hand, delegating jobs. She sure knows how to set a plan into motion.

The Petaluma City Council would be privileged to have such a team player working for the overall preservation of such an original community. Tiffany Renée is a diligent and talented person who demonstrates strong leadership that runs in our family. A person with so much dedication and motivation would be the one I would vote for to better serve my city, without reservation.

Argus Courier Thursday, Oct 16, 2008 Letter to the Editor BY JANICE CADER-THOMPSON

Editor: I am voting for David Glass and Tiffany Renée in the Petaluma City Council race and urge you to do the same. I have lived here all my life and served one term on the City Council, during which time I secured a $4 million grant for the expansion of Shollenberger Park. I represented the residents and businesses of this community, but did not play ball with the good ol’ boys.

We need a council majority that will once again conduct the city’s business in an open, honest manner. No more behind-the-scene deals. We have experienced the same shenanigans locally that we are experiencing nationally and it is time to say enough. The current majority would have given away 64 acres of public land for a dollar per year, no questions asked, if the public, the mayor and Councilmember Barrett hadn’t stopped them.

Let’s give the mayor the team she deserves. Mayor Pam Torliatt has asked us to vote for former mayor David Glass and Tiffany Renée. We all know Torliatt. Her family, like mine, has been here for generations. And I am proud to say I supported David Glass when no one knew him. And many former foes of Glass found him to be fair and honest during his term as mayor. These are characteristics we can’t get enough of these days. He has earned our support.

Tiffany Renée comes well prepared, having run for a seat in 2006, highly praised when she applied for the vacated seat of Torliatt when Torliatt won the mayor’s post after Glass stepped aside, and Renée has continued to prepare by attending every meeting for more than two years.

I have had enough of Petaluma’s back-door politics as usual with the developers’ majority. I say give Mayor Torliatt her council and then watch a change for the better with inclusive, open government. Please vote for Glass and Renée and return the power to the people of Petaluma.

Glass tops council candidates in campaign contributions

Six candidates for Petaluma City Council raised a combined $59,000 in campaign contributions during the three-month period ending Sept. 30, city records show.

And opponents of Measure K, the water and sewer rollback initiative, brought in about $12,300. The Yes-on-K group said it was not required to file until year-end but only collected a few thousands dollars.

Former Mayor David Glass led the field of candidates with $18,714, including a self-loan of $3,000. Councilwoman Samantha Freitas had about $11,000 and former Councilman Mike Healy trailed with about $10,200.

Candidate Tiffany Renée collected about $9,600, including a $1,000 loan to herself, Councilwoman Karen Nau had $6,500, and candidate Spence Burton had $2,800, including his own $2,000 loan.

Nau topped her competitors in spending for the period at $22,000.

Money came to campaign coffers from all quarters. Glass got cash from past and present council members, including $200 from Mayor Pam Torliatt.

He also received donations from candidates in other cities. Freitas and Healy had money from development and business interests, including $200 each from the North Coast Builders Exchange.

Renée had smaller donations from residents and labor groups while Nau had numerous developer contributions. Burton had support from Diane Reilly-Torres, a community watchdog.

The No-on-K group, Petalumans for Clean Water and Fiscal Responsibility, took money from a variety of sources including local developers, environmentalists, Realtors and city employee unions.

The group spent about $10,000 over the three months and had about $2,300 left in the bank.
